Earthing science & intuition to heal, calm & be happier
Have you always felt intuitively that being in nature and being grounded (or earthing as it’s now called) is good for your health? Well now the science seems to be backing that up.
It’s obvious that being in nature, gardening, and being outdoors has positive effects on people. You feel calm, connected, and the craziness of the human world falls away for a little while. It just feels good. Well, now earthing science seems to be confirming this and may indicate that being grounded is a powerful effect on health and well being.
A whole new area of interest has opened up recently around grounding or earthing. It’s simply being in direct physical contact with nature in a way that gives you a direct electrical connection with the earth - literally being in electrical contact and receiving the earth’s electrical charge.
Scientific studies of the effects of grounding to date have been small early studies. But, the indications seem to indicate possible medical benefits.
Some, like Paul, feel that grounding has played an important role in their own personal healing journey.
And in addition to the physically measurable electrical contact, intuitive people like Satomi can tell you that by just being in nature, they feel much more. And that the subtle energies they feel are also essential for health and well-being.
A healing intuitive connection to Mother Earth
Satomi: I love grounding. I go outside almost every day to connect to nature. And what happens is that as soon as I connect to nature... like with bare feet or bare hands... as soon as I sit down on the ground, I touch the trees and what I feel is that all the tension or negativity in me starts to drain into the earth.
I feel it. I feel relaxed and the tensions are going away. And any negativity or stress that I’m carrying is going away. It’s just like the earth is sucking away all my tension and bad energy. Earth is breathing in the bad stuff for me. And then breathes out good energy. And then when the earth breathes out the good energy, I breathe in that energy. Yeah.
And then again I breathe out more negativity and tension and breathe in and then when the earth breathes out I breathe in. So it's like we're breathing together right? In and out, in and out. And I feel the earth breathing in and out too. And we're one and connected. It's just amazing! I really love it.
And me especially being an empath it's important to connect to nature right so if you're an empath it really really helps and if you're not an empath it really helps you too [Laughter].
Paul: I think you experience more than what most people experience but it's completely consistent with what most people experience.
Satomi: They might not be aware of what's happening, but as an empath, I receive it.
Paul: Yeah you're more sensitive but everybody loves it right? Just going out into nature for a little walk right? It's completely natural.
Recent science indicates possible health benefits of grounding
Paul: You're talking about how earth is giving. Earth just gives right? Everything that we eat, right everything that we wear, it's all coming from the earth. So this is just another example of earth giving. You're feeling the energy of the earth and the science seems to be backing this up these days.
It's all very early studies but they are showing really interesting results. And they seem to be showing direct health benefits to people. It seems to be helping with chronic fatigue, chronic pain, sleep disorders (just getting better sleep), mood issues like anxiety, depression, and things like that. And that just makes sense right? And then also with cardiovascular problems like lowering blood pressure.
Satomi: And it's just simple. You just go out and touch dirt. Walking on bare feet - that's it right? You don't need anything else.
Paul: No.
Saomit: I just connect to nature. Yeah bare feet - that's it, simple!
Paul: Well, they actually say that when we invented artificial soles, the thing is that they actually cut us off from the electrical connection to the earth. I mean, I love the plastic soles in my shoes because they hold up. But what we’ve lost in the bargain is that by wearing them, we no longer receive free electrons from the earth.
Even if you haven’t heard about this, it isn't made up stuff. This is real. When we are grounding, there are real, measurable electrons flowing in a gentle current into our bodies from the earth. And electrons change the chemistry in your body. How it does so in all it’s myriad ways isn’t understood yet but it’s not news that free electrons change the nature of chemical reactions. The exchange and sharing of electrons IS EVERYTHING in chemistry. Just as chemistry is the bedrock of biology. And biology is the basis of health. So, it is not news that if you want good health, you need to pay attention to chemistry.
So that's why the new research is saying the health effects are there. The idea they are looking into is that with our modern lifestyle we’ve accidentally interfered with something very simple, subtle, and yet very important. The theory is that by simply wearing those modern shoes, using modern (non-electrically conductive) flooring (e.g. carpet and laminate) and stuff like that we're getting those modern diseases. So this could be a really big deal.
Grounding lowers blood pressure and may have helped Paul heal from Sarcoidosis
Paul: In my case I've been using a grounding blanket. It's really convenient because I can just have it in the bed right? And I can be grounded to the earth at the same time.
Satomi: All night long.
Paul: Yeah. So it's a really nice thing. And every time I have it on me I can feel the blood flowing more easily in my body. And that's one of the things that they report is that because of the free electrons that you're getting from the earth, it's changing the chemistry in your body so that your blood flows more easily. And that's why there's a drop in blood pressure and stuff like that.
And I've been recovering from sarcoidosis. The doctors now say I am fully recovered. I’d say part of that credit goes to having that grounding blanket because every night it's allowing my blood to flow more easily. And if your blood is flowing more, it stands to reason that you're getting more oxygen into your system right? It's getting into your tissues better and you can heal better. I'm not basing that on direct research but it's just logical.
And the thing about sarcoidosis is that it creates granules of cells in your blood. The blood cells stick together more than they should. But with this grounding blanket, if my blood is flowing better, it’s not sticking together so much anymore. And that could be why it's helping me with sarcoidosis. That's theory but it is logical.
Satomi: And then the doctor didn't give you anything right?
Paul: No. That's me taking no medication or doing anything that the doctor recommended because they didn't provide anything else. They only provided me the option to take medication. But I did this instead and I got better. So yeah it is potentially very powerful. I love it. I swear by it. But that is totally anecdotal.
Trusting your intuition can help you heal
Satomi: Everybody loves being in nature right? Part of the reason it feels good is that your body knows what it needs.
By being out in nature, you're giving your body what it needs, and if your body is happy, you're happy right? So you love it. So get grounded and be in nature and touch dirt! Get dirty! And once in a while live like a cave man. [laughter] So let's get grounded!
Paul: Yeah!
Satomi: Okay let's go! You’re not coming?
Paul: Oh wait, wait. Okay. [laughter]
So what's your experience been like with grounding?
Satomi: Like sitting on the grass, doing gardening, walking barefoot on the beach, anything right? Anything connected to nature.
