9 Tip Empath Survival Guide - Release Emotional Overwhelm

Hi, today I’m sharing 9 survival tips for empaths to release emotional overwhelm so you can be calm, empowered, and maybe even just get a good night’s sleep.

Many, many people are empathic, so this survival guide is not just for people who identify as empaths.  Empathic people have the same challenges as empaths even if in some cases to a lesser degree.  So it's not just empaths who receive negative energy from others, it can happen to anyone.  Sometimes when you feel angry, sad, or exhausted without any reason.  Or even if you feel anxious, stressed, or have insomnia.  You might be receiving negative energy from others without knowing it.  This kind of thing happens more than you might think.

When you receive so much that you get knocked down, you start to feel depressed and anxious.  So it's a good idea to cleanse to get rid of negative energy daily.  I share lots of daily exercises on our Sakaso.ca blog so check those out.

Overwhelm can be subtle and gradual or sudden and dramatic

Yes, absolutely, insomnia, chronic stress, and other issues can be a result of receiving energy from others in a gradual, subtle way.  You may even be an empath without knowing it. I was.

But sometimes even if you’re aware of this issue and you do daily exercises to cleanse your energy, it just hits you from out of nowhere.  It’s just like what just happened to me recently: I was fine just a few seconds before, and then all of a sudden I’m shaking, irritated, and I cannot describe how I’m feeling!  And I can’t even think clearly.  I feel just like yelling “Help me!” kind of thing.  And then, obviously, it's not good to stay in that space, so you’ve got to cleanse that negative energy as soon as possible.  

So that’s why I’m sharing these nine tips as a survival guide for what you can do.  

Empath Survival Guide Tip 1: Go out in nature

My favourite survival tip is simply going out in nature.  You don't have to do anything.  Just go for a walk.  When you do, the earth and the universe cleanse your body and your energy.  You can just let the energy drain into the earth.  It soaks up the bad energy for you and you receive positive clean beautiful energy back into you.

Empath Survival Guide Tip 2: Exercise

But sometimes you can't just go out in nature right?  A lot of us live in the city.  I do.  But, I’m probably luckier than many because natural settings are only an hour away.  So the number two tip is to do some form of physical exercise.  Go for a jog, hit the gym, or in your living room with your favourite yoga video.  With exercise you’re physically shaking it off.  So just go crazy and shake off that negative energy.  If you have punching back, punch it.I love doing that too.

Empath Survival Guide Tip 3: Meditate

The number three survival tip is meditation.  Meditation is well known to have so many physical and mental health benefits.   Well, it also does wonders for cleansing the negative energy right off your body so you can be free and calm.  There are so many types of meditation: quiet-your-mind meditation, visualization meditation, mindfulness, etc.  All of them work so you can choose what works best for you.  And if you’re not able to set aside an hour or even 20 minutes, then do a 5 minute meditation.  Even a 5 minute meditation can often create enough of a break.  Do what you can when you can and see what works best for you.

Empath Survival Guide Tip 4: Shower

But when I’m feeling like I’m being attacked by something and I don't know what’s going on, I don't think about meditating and I don't feel like going to the gym.  Sometimes, it’s just too much right?  So, in that situation, what I can do is use the number four tip: simply take a shower.  Simply taking a shower and cleansing your body, you can feel that negative energy getting washed off.  A cold shower is best, but if that’s too rough, a warm shower can work instead.

And when you’re in the shower, just imagine that the water is cleansing all that dirty negative heavy energy off of you and then going down the drain.  When you're done, you’ll feel lighter.

Empath Survival Guide Tip 5: Smudge

The number five survival tip is to smudge.  Smudging is just the burning of fragrant herbs similar to using incense and it can be used to cleanse yourself of negative energy.  Just pick your favourite smudge sticks (e.g. Sage or Palo Santo) and smudge yourself.  Sometimes, you can benefit from smudging the room and even the house.  I love smudging.  I just instantly feel the energy change and my mood being lifted.

Empath Survival Guide Tip 6: Crystals

The number six tip is to use crystals.  Find your favourite crystal ‒ there's lots to choose from that tend to do different things.  But the most important thing is the connection between you and the crystal.  If you feel the energy ‒ the happy energy, or a cleansing feeling, that's the one you can carry with you.  You can have a crystal in your pocket or in your purse.  Or you can wear a necklace or bracelet.  There's lots of different ways to use crystals, so go ahead and try them out.  It is important to occasionally clear your crystals to refresh the energy they hold but that’s a different topic.

Empath Survival Guide Tip 7: Calm, relaxing music

The number seven empath survival tip is to listen to some relaxing meditation music.  As I mentioned earlier, sometimes, when it’s just too much ‒ you don't want to go to a crystal store, you don't want to go to the gym, and you just don't feel like doing anything.  When it’s like that, you can just pick up your phone and search some relaxing music and play it and just sit there and do nothing.  Just let the music do the work and help you.

Empath Survival Guide Tip 8: Positive affirmations

And the number eight tip is affirmation.  We have another video posted on our blog where I use an affirmation phrase.  When you practice that affirmation, you are filled with powerful, beautiful peaceful, healing energy.   That's literally the affirmation phrase.  And you simply repeat that and it really helps. 

Empath Survival Guide Tip 9: Creating your own peaceful space

And the number nine empath survival tip is another video posted on our blog that guides you into creating your own peaceful space.  Because there is negative energy coming from outside, you can sometimes feel it pushing in on you, and it can squish your peaceful space, your connection to your true self.  When that happens, you don't feel like you have any space and you feel like you can’t breathe.  But with this exercise, you create your peaceful space and then you spread that space and make it bigger and bigger and bigger.   It creates your sacred space and brings out your true self.  I use that one every day too.

So try each one of these tips.  Everybody's favourite is different.   And which one works best for any given person can be different from day to day.  Usually, I do number eight and number nine but sometimes I don't even feel like doing it so I just go have a shower or smudge.
