Calm emotions & bad moods with this breathing exercise
For a really simple grounding and breathing exercise to help you get through those bad days by calming those negative emotions and moods, check out this video.
Perhaps the best breathing technique for grounding, processing emotion, and dealing with those bad days
So we all have bad days. Just those days when you're stuck with this really tough emotional yuck. It could be anger, sadness, or other bad moods. And it could be just from having bad things happen that day, or it could be from what's called processing.
Anytime you're doing self-improvement, you’ll usually run into processing. You know, if you're trying to learn something new and become a little bit better person, it's not a straight line process. It can be two steps forward, one step back, two steps forward, and one step back. And it often kind of gets worse before it gets better.
If you tried something new, and you’re having some bad days, the first thing to do, is to just recognize it for what it is. It's not like what you're doing necessarily is the wrong thing because it’s rough. It just means that you're working with an old pattern ‒ an old energy pattern ‒ that you've built up around yourself. If you have old habits, and you're trying to shift into a new self, that creates a little bit of disruption. So just recognize it for what it is and then honour it because it is part of the process. And let yourself go through and honour yourself by giving yourself some time and space so you can work with it.
There's a lot of different approaches to do that and one of the easiest ways is physical exercise. I love doing physical exercise, but if that's not something that's gonna work for you that day, there's other approaches that are a little more gentle and a little easier to do. And I’m gonna show you one today but you can also check out the YouTube card later in the video for a variety of approaches that we can offer.
How to breathe with the earth
So let's dive right in. The whole idea is simply to give all that negative energy to the earth. And the earth is willing and eager to take it. It takes all kinds of compost and it turns it into beautiful soil. It’s just what the earth does. And it gives us back all that clean beautiful positive energy. The earth just gives and gives. Just like when you go out into nature like this and all the trees are giving us oxygen and all this beauty around us. That's the earth just giving.
And as we're doing that, we're grounding. We're connecting with the earth with our energy. So take a big slow deep breath in and feel all that negative energy inside of us for a moment. Just be aware of it and then let it go as we breathe out through our mouth. Let it go out and down into the earth. Just release it down and the earth will take it away.
And then we breathe in through our nose all that beautiful positive energy that the earth gives us. Then hold momentarily, and then again release the negative energy as you breathe out. Just let it go. We don't need it anymore.
It helps if we have our back straight and to be standing on the earth. But we don't have to. We can do this inside too. Anywhere that's comfortable will do.
Breathe in again and then breathe out as you let all that stuff go. We don't need it anymore. Just release it to the earth. Just give it away and breathe in that beautiful clean positive energy. Feel your connection with the earth. You can visualize your energy connecting deep into the earth just like roots going down from a tree. And then down through those roots goes all that negative energy leaving you.
Keep breathing slowly as long or as short as you like.
And when you're ready, just come back. You can take your time with this.
