How to do Nadi Sanchalana
To do it, take your right hand and curl your index and middle fingers and extend the other fingers. With your left hand, make a ring with your thumb and index finger.
Sit in a relaxed position back straight and body relaxed.
Put your right thumb on your right nostril to block it and then breathe in and out through your left nostril very quickly (about 100 breaths per minute - not quite 2 breaths per second). This is not abdominal breathing. You're just using your chest to breathe (this the opposite from Kapalabhati in which you breathe with your abdomen only and not the chest at all). Do it about 60 times but if you feel light headed or have any discomfort, you can just stop and rest at any time (this is true for all of the breathing in this yoga). You don’t have to do 60 total. If you are only comfortable with doing 30 or 40 that’s fine. With practice you will be able to increase the amount.
Then switch to breathing with your right nostril. Use your right ring-finger to block your left nostril and then again breathe 60 times (or less if there is discomfort) in and out through your right nostril very quickly. Again, this is chest breathing only.
And then do the same rapid breathing with both nostrils open 60 times (or less).
Once you get used to it you can do up to about 100 times for each of the 3 sets. And the pace of breathing can increase over time and get up to about 100 breaths per minute.
And now just relax and enjoy the feeling of your energy boost.
Nadi Sanchalana has some similarities to Kapalabhati (or skull shining breath) but also some key differences. We recommend you try both to see which one you prefer.
